Improvements
Pedestrian environment

The pedestrian environment around Waterloo Station is a disgrace. It is arguably one of the worst in Central London.

Major improvements will be possible with the development of Elizabeth House and we are proposing to do the following:

1) Provide a much better pedestrian route from York Road up to Victory Arch which does not mean crossing so many roads.

2) Provide a new pedestrian friendly ‘street’ between the new development and the Waterloo International Terminal building where the taxi and service area is now.

3) Provide new escalators into the Station at platform level from the new street so that people can go directly from the station to the London Eye and St Thomas’s Hospital.

4) Provide a new access straight into the Underground ticket hall from York Road.

5) Remove the central ‘island’ from York Road so that we can make the pavements wider for people.

By creating three buildings on the site of Elizabeth House we can stop it being a barrier to the station and open up the area with public spaces for people to move through easily.
